While the old adage “you are what you eat” motivates us to eat real, nutrient dense foods, it should really be updated to “you are what you eat and drink!” As a Holistic Nutritionist, one of the first things we learn is the importance of drinking at least eight glasses of pure water each day to support a healthy digestive system, immune system, circulation in the body, as well as to maintain energy levels. If you ever feel tired, headachy, dizzy, constipated or have dry skin, eczema, cold fingers and toes, or muscle pains, chances are you may be dehydrated.
But drinking eight glasses of water may not be enough to promote optimal wellness. Although water plays a primary role in the removal of toxins from the body, drinking tap water may actually do more harm than good. According to the Environmental Working Group, tap water has over 300 chemicals and pollutants. This includes heavy metals, such as mercury and lead, which can lead to toxicity and have been linked to many health issues including fatigue, irritability and headaches. It also includes volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) like pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals from agricultural run-off that have been linked to damaging the liver, kidneys and reproductive system. A range of chemicals that are flushed down the toilet at home can also contaminate our water supply, such as hormone replacement drugs and the birth control pill. These endocrine disrupting chemicals can potentially mimic or interfere with the body’s normal hormones and lead to harmful developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects. Do you really want to be drinking tap water anymore? No, thanks!
Thank goodness we have options to avoid drinking solely tap water. Enter GE Appliances and their new Advanced Pharmaceutical Filtration (APF) Technology, which removes all the usual impurities as well as 94% of the top five trace pharmaceuticals most commonly found in tap water. This includes drugs such as oral contraceptives, beta-blockers, anti-depressants and ibuprofen to deliver cleaner, tastier water and ice. Say goodbye to nasty odours, tastes, chemicals and pollutants! To develop the most advanced water filtration system in the business, GE’s engineers settled on using coconut shells to eliminate pharmaceuticals and common contaminants. The process of burning coconut shells produces activated carbon, which can be milled and molded into filters. The carbon produced from coconuts is more absorbent and less dense than the more commonly used coal-based carbon, which allows the filtration system to easily catch impurities and chemically trap the smaller pharmaceutical molecules. How neat is that?
If you’re in the market for a new refrigerator, a GE refrigerator with APF Technology is worth the investment. Not only do APF refrigerators have a sleek and beautiful design with maximized interior space, but they also boast Energy Star certification with up to 130% lower Global Warming Potential than the competition. With GE, you can reduce your carbon footprint and take control of your own personal health and wellness with the choices you make every day.
