Super Green Matcha Hemp Seed Smoothie

If you’re trying to cut down on your coffee consumption, matcha is the way to go. This Super Green Matcha Hemp Seed Smoothie will provide the fuel needed to kick-start your day. Matcha is a type of powdered green tea that’s produced in Japan. Comparatively, one cup of matcha has as many antioxidants as 10 cups of brewed green tea. The finely ground powder is also rich in chlorophyll, vitamins, fiber, and can help calm the mind. While I typically make my smoothies with nut milks, I’ve been enjoying hemp seed milk more these days. It’s super easy to make and doesn’t even require straining through a nut milk bag or cheesecloth. Given the high nutritional quality of hemp seeds, they’re definitely one of my all-time favourite foods. I sprinkle them on absolutely everything — from smoothies, overnight oats, salads, grain bowls, desserts, and more! Hemp seeds offer essential fatty acids (a balance of 3:1 omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids) and are considered a “perfect protein,” as the seeds contain all 20 amino acids and the 8 essential amino acids that our bodies cannot produce. Hemp seeds are also excellent sources of manganese, magnesium, zinc, and iron. Are you convinced on adding more hemp seeds into your life, yet? I hope so! Packed with nutrients, matcha to give you a natural buzz and fresh mint leaves to give a pop of freshness, this smoothie is the perfect way to fuel your day.

Hemp Seed Milk
  1. 3/4 cup unhulled hemp seeds (hemp hearts)
  2. 4 cups filtered water
Smoothie
  1. 1 cup hemp seed milk
  2. 1 cup curly kale, de-stemmed
  3. 1 frozen banana
  4. 1 tbsp pumpkin seed butter or almond butter
  5. 1 tbsp ground flaxseeds
  6. 1 tsp matcha powder
  7. 6 fresh mint leaves
Optional Smoothie Ingredients
  1. 6 - 7 ice cubes; you'll want to add ice cubes if you're not using a frozen banana
  2. 1 medjool date, pitted
  3. 1 tsp pure vanilla extract or 1/2 tsp vanilla bean
  4. Pinch of pink Himalayan salt
For the Hemp Seed Milk
  1. In a high-speed blender, blend hemp seeds and water for 30 seconds - 1 minute. You don't need to strain the milk through a nut milk bag or cheesecloth like nut milks, as there is no pulp. If there is any graininess, you can strain the milk through a nut milk bag, if desired. You can also sweeten the milk with natural sweetener, if you'd like.
  2. Store the remaining hemp seed milk in a mason jar in the refrigerator up to 4 days.
For the Smoothie
  1. In a high-speed blender, blend ingredients until smooth.
  2. Serve immediately. Enjoy!
